How Massage Therapy Works

Massage is an effective treatment for anyone pursuing holistic health and well-being. Professional massage therapy works by relaxing soft tissue and increasing blood and lymph circulation. This releases nerve tension and initiates healing in deeper connective tissue, as well as the surface muscles, tendons, and ligaments.

When used as an accompaniment to chiropractic adjustments, massage can support the treatment by relaxing muscles that were holding vertebrae out of place and thereby further assisting the nervous system’s proper function.

Our massage therapists in Oregon City have helped countless individuals relieve pain, increase circulation, and improve overall well-being through trusted techniques and practices. With our help, you can experience a better quality of life and reduce physical pain and discomfort.

Our licensed massage therapist, Sannalee, has a deep-tissue, fascia-based approach to massage and bodywork due to her training in SOMA Structural Integration, which she has been practicing for 15 years. She keeps things ever-moving, her work is integrated (not segmented), and she is intuitive when working with the body. Patients get off the table walking and feeling differently – more embodied and more expansive, with smoother and more easeful alignment. Every session is different depending on what is physically present and personal to each patient at the time of their massage.

SOMA Structural Integration hails from the Ida Rolph (or Rolfing) lineage. This type of bodywork is profound in its transformative possibilities because it is dynamic and collaborative. Sannalee and her patients work together to shift ongoing and limiting patterns, teaching and reminding the body of what easeful alignment and movement feel like. With increased spaciousness and smoothness in the body’s tissue comes a decrease in pain and discomfort, deeper relaxation, and increased energy and self-confidence. Every session is personalized for the best results.

Benefits of Massage Therapy

There are several benefits you may experience when you incorporate massage therapy into your wellness routine. Our patients most often note the following benefits described below after working with our massage therapists.

Relief from Stress & Tension

Everyone can benefit from practices that ultimately reduce stress and melt away tension. Massage therapy is one of the best ways you can relieve the stress of daily life or physical stressors that have been compounding for months or even years. Stress in one’s shoulders, neck, back, and other areas of the body can be reduced significantly with help from our experts.

Massage is also one of the most common and timeless techniques used to ease anxiety, depression, and other mental and emotional ailments. Improved Circulation

A lot of our patients come into Complete Health Chiropractic Center for services that will help improve their circulation. Poor circulation can lead to numbness or tingling in one’s extremities, swelling, cold hands or feet, fatigue, digestive complaints, joint pain, and muscle cramping. With assistance from our experienced massage therapists, we help increase circulation and blood flow in our patients so they can live life to the fullest.

A study from the University of Illinois in Chicago in 2014 found that massage therapy improves general blood flow and alleviates muscle soreness after physical activity. According to their results, massage therapy is beneficial for not just athletes, but also those with limited mobility or impaired vascular function.

Lower Blood Pressure

The two most concerning problems that can present themselves as a result of high blood pressure are strokes and heart attacks. Whether genetics, poor diet, or other causes have contributed to high blood pressure, the good news is, our massage therapy services in Oregon City can help.

According to research presented in the International Journal of Preventive Medicine, individuals with high blood pressure showed significant improvement in their blood pressure readings after receiving massage services of some kind compared to a control group that received no therapeutic interventions. Additionally, those in the massage group of the study showed steady improvements in the blood pressure for up to 72 hours after receiving massage services.

Faster Recovery from Injury & Accidents

After an injury or auto accident, your body may feel fine the day of or the day after the accident. This is especially true for car accident victims experiencing the side effects of whiplash. Once the pain settles in from an accident, you may have a more difficult time trying to recover than you initially thought. Luckily, massage therapy is a great way to heal the physical trauma caused by accident or injury.

We use a variety of therapeutic techniques to help our patients overcome and recover from whiplash. Massage therapy is a proven treatment for muscle and ligament damage that has been caused by whiplash. With help from our massage therapists at Complete Health Chiropractic Center in Oregon City, you can recover from your accident or injury and get back on with your life quickly.

Different Types of Massage and Bodywork Services

With our Oregon City massage therapists here to see you through all stages of physical recovery, you can count on experiencing relief from your symptoms as soon as you start working with us. To ensure that all of our clients receive individualized care for their pain and ailments, our therapists use a combination of several proven techniques depending on the client’s needs each time they come in for a treatment.

Our Massage and Bodywork services include:

Structural Integration

Structural integration (also called myofascial bodywork) is deep tissue bodywork that works with the fascia, the connective tissue that surrounds our muscles and organs. Structural Integration is focused on function. It improves posture, eases/alleviates chronic pain, and improves overall movement by creating more space, releasing old restrictive fascial patterns, and realigning the body’s structure.

Structural integration is known for its fascial unwinding and rebalancing program called the “10-Series.” Whether you are doing one session or the classic 10-Series program, precise and slow, deep pressure, as well as collaborative movements, are utilized to return the body to a more optimal and balanced state. Structural integration is particularly beneficial for those with chronic pain, limited range of motion, and postural issues. With optimized function always comes deeper relaxation, more energy, and renewal.

Craniofacial Therapy

Craniofacial therapy is hands-on work on the head, jaw, neck, and face that releases tension by slowly, gently, deeply and precisely working with the fascia and tissue of those areas. This work can help alleviate headaches, TMJ disorders, and sinus issues by encouraging the natural movement and alignment of the bones in the head, neck, face, and jaw. This parasympathetic work is deeply relaxing and balances the nervous system. Craniofacial therapy is ideal for those seeking relief from head, neck and face pain, high stress and anxiety, or any tension-related conditions, as well as for those simply looking to improve overall well-being.

Intraoral Massage

Intraoral massage is a specialized technique that targets the muscles inside the mouth to relieve tension in the jaw, neck, and head. This treatment is great for those suffering from TMJ disorders, chronic headaches, or facial pain.

Our trained therapists use gloved hands to apply soft but precise pressure to the muscles inside of the mouth to release deep-seated tension. This approach not only alleviates pain but also improves overall muscle function and alignment. Intraoral work usually takes about 10-15 minutes and can be added into a session where the client wants focused time spent working around the head, face, jaw and neck.

Intranasal Massage

Intranasal massage is a technique focused on increasing spaciousness, releasing tension, and improving airflow by working on the tissue and fascia within the nasal passages. This treatment is ideal for those experiencing chronic sinus issues, breathing difficulties, tension headaches, or head/face trauma.

Our therapists use gloved hands (specifically, slender gloved pinky fingers) to apply gentle, controlled pressure inside the nasal passages. This method helps to open up airways, reduce congestion, and ease discomfort. Intranasal massage not only promotes better breathing but also supports overall sinus health and promotes deep relaxation. Intranasal work usually takes about 10-15 minutes and can be added into a session where the client wants focused time spent working around the head, face, jaw, and neck.

Abdominal Massage

Abdominal massage is a specialized technique that slowly, gently, and precisely works the deep muscles, tissue, and fascia around the organs in the abdomen. By working the space between the diaphragm to the hip flexors and pubic bone, this therapy can deepen breathing and inhalation, improve digestion, relieve low back pain, decrease menstrual tension and pain, soften post/surgical scar tissue and adhesions that may be pulling/pressing on organs like the bladder, release gut tension and anxiety, and restore balance to the body.

Depending on the client, abdominal work usually takes about 15-20 minutes and is typically an adjunct or complement to other techniques in a session. Abdominal massage is surprisingly soothing, and most clients get off the table after receiving this work feeling longer, taller, more grounded and balanced between their front and back bodies, with more easeful leg swing and ability to lift their leg and tie their shoelaces.

Craniosacral Massage

Craniosacral massage is a gentle, non-invasive therapy that focuses on the delicate rhythms of the craniosacral system, which includes the membranes and cerebrospinal fluids surrounding the brain and spinal cord. By using very light touch, this technique helps release tension, ease pain, and boost the body’s natural healing abilities.

Our therapists apply gentle pressure to key areas, restoring relaxation and balance to the nervous system. Craniosacral work is especially effective for those dealing with chronic pain, stress, migraines, or emotional imbalances.

Swedish Massage

Swedish massage is a classic and widely popular technique known for its relaxing and restorative effects. This full-body massage uses gentle, flowing strokes to enhance circulation, reduce muscle tension, and ease stress, making it perfect for those seeking relaxation or relief from daily aches and pains.

Our therapists use a combination of long, smooth strokes, kneading, and circular movements to soothe the muscles and calm the mind. Swedish massage is ideal for anyone looking to unwind, improve circulation.

Fascia Stretch Therapy

Fascia stretch therapy technique is a pain-free modality that uses constant circulatory, gently oscillating and rocking movements of traction and stabilization to decompress joints and expand space in the soft tissues. Beyond gaining range of motion where needed, the client experiences significant movement, function, and proprioceptive improvement.

Our therapists typically utilize FST techniques as an adjunct or complement to other techniques in a session. FST is optimal for very tight, or muscular bodies, although all body types can benefit from this collaborative, dynamic and gentle stretching approach. Clients experience an overall feeling of wellbeing, confidence, and ease after receiving fascia stretch therapy.

FAQs About Oregon City Massage Therapy and Bodywork

Will I be face up or down for treatment?

That depends on your specific needs. In any given session, our Oregon City LMT may ask you to lay face down, face up, on your right side, left side, or all of the above. Please let her know if you have any specific requests during your session so that we can accommodate you and help you feel the most comfortable.

Can I keep my clothes on and still receive healing benefits from a bodywork treatment?

While most clients prefer to be minimally clothed for a session, our therapists do very effective healing work with a client fully clothed, should that be the client’s preference. If a client prefers to stay fully clothed, we recommend a pair of loose sweat pants and loose t-shirt or a loose tank top for the session (no spandex and nothing tight).

How does massage therapy help with auto injuries?

For those who have been in an auto accident recently, our typical approach is to identify what is causing you the most pain immediately and provide relief for that. And, because we practice a holistic approach, we ensure your treatment reflects this so you leave our office with more ease and balance in the whole of your body. In some cases, after a course of several weeks of treatment, we have seen some clients recover movement, function, and ease levels that are better than prior to their auto accident. Outcomes like this vary from client to client, but it is not unusual for clients to have this experience.
